Robert V. Burns Funeral Home has also become an Old Glory Collection Center as part of their proud membership in Veterans & Family Memorial Care. The mission is to collect old, tattered, unusable flags to be retired in a dignified manner in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code.
As the United States continues to prosecute the War on Terror, across the nation, Americans continue to display their pride and patriotism to a dress not witnessed since the World War II era. Our nation’s flag flies boldly from homes, offices, and automobiles. As time passes, however, many of these flags begin to show the ill effects of exposure to wind and weather. As they are replaced, their owners are faced with the dilemma of what to do with them.
For this reason, we sponsor an annual flag retirement ceremony conducted by the local Boy Scout Troop No. 51 and Cub Scout Pack No. 51 and Girl Scouts. Our Fourth Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at the Clarion Oaks Golf Course.
Once a flag is no longer fit to be flown it is to be ceremoniously burned as a means of proper retirement. The ceremony is an opportunity for the residents of Clarion and surrounding areas, to replace flags no longer fit for public display in a patriotic and highly dignified manner. The flags collected are properly disposed of in honor of the men and women proudly serving for our nation and in memory of those who have sacrificed their lives in the protection of our local communities and nation.
This distinctive ceremony is a wonderful experience for people of all ages to attend. All are welcome. Local residents and businesses are encouraged to bring any flags, which are no longer serviceable, to the ceremony on the day of the event. Flags can also be dropped off in advance at the Robert V. Burns Funeral Home, American Legion Post No. 066 of Clarion, Moose Post No. 101 of Clarion, and VFW Post No. 2145 of Clarion, True Value of Clarion, Trader Horn of Clarion, Donna Oberlander’s Office of Clarion, and Tom’s Riverside of Knox, Rimersburg, and New Bethlehem.
