Daniel F. Carey

Daniel F. Carey, age 76, of Sligo, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, August 30, 2026, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 7, 1950, in Pittsburgh. Daniel was one of five children of the late Bernard J. Carey, Sr. and Madeline M. Cullen Carey. Following graduation from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Daniel proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1974. He was stationed aboard the USS Belknap in Norfolk, Virginia, where he served with honor and dedication. His connection to his Navy family remained strong throughout the years, and he proudly attended the annual USS Belknap reunions. After his military service, Daniel continued his education at Clarion University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education before earning his master’s degree. Daniel began his career teaching special education at Redbank Valley High School, where he also coached wrestling. He then worked as a UniServ rep for PSEA in Pittsburgh before rising to Region Field Director until his retirement. Daniel married the love of his life, Donna J. Simpson, on June 21, 1975, and they shared nearly forty-four years of marriage until her sudden passing on March 30, 2019. Daniel was a member of the American Legion Post #066 of Clarion. He was also a proud member of the Indivisible We Rise – West Central PA group and the Clarion County Democrats, where he served on the executive committee. Daniel was deeply involved in both organizations and a passionate advocate for the political beliefs and causes he supported. He loved music and was an avid fan of Kathy Mattea, whose music brought him great enjoyment throughout the years. Daniel also loved to travel, especially on cruises. He leaves behind his two sons, Joseph Carey and his wife, Paula, of North East, MD, and Colin Carey and his wife, Caitlin, of Ramona, CA; and his companion, Kathleen Krouse of Summerville. Daniel also leaves behind his brother, Tom Carey and his wife, Beth, of Canton, GA; his sister, Maggie “Margie” Yoder and her husband, Bill, of Waynesboro, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and beloved wife, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Michael Carey and Bernie Carey. Family and friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the Robert V. Burns Funeral Home in Clarion, where military honors will be accorded at 6 p.m. by the American Legion Post #066. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Daniel’s honor to the Clarion Free Library, 644 Main Street, Clarion, PA 16214.
