Richard C. Burns, 80, of Route 68, Sligo, died Tuesday, February 08, 2011, at the Clairview Nursing Home in Sligo. Born on March 4, 1930, in Sligo, he was the son of Clair Wyman and Gladys Ruth Summerville Burns. A veteran, he served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Steinaker during the Korean War. Mr. Burns was married on May 4, 1984 to the former Pauline L. Smith Elder, she survives. He worked as a truck driver. Mr. Burns was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #277 of Clarion. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Colleen Freeman of Oil City; and Michelle Applequist and her husband, Eric, of Oil City; two stepsons, Frederick Gilhousen of Indiana and Todd Gilhousen of Rimersburg; a daughter-in-law, Paula Burns of California; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are three siblings, Gladys Shoup of California; Kathleen Craig of Clarion; and Priscilla Moore of Radford, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Richard Burns. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2011, at the Robert V. Burns Funeral Home, 638 Wood Street, Clarion. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post #66 at 10:45 a.m. on Friday, February 11, 2011, in the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 11, 2011, in the funeral home with Rev. Ralph Campbell III, pastor of the Church of God in Sligo, officiating. Interment will be held in the Sligo Cemetery.
